The Algerian army killed nine Islamic extremists in an ambush over the weekend east of Algiers, local media reported Monday. The terrorists belonged to the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which is linked to al-Qaeda.
The operation, which also seized weapons including assault rifles, took place some 10 days after the ambush of an Algerian army patrol near a GSPC stronghold which left 10 soldiers dead and 13 wounded.
