Spanish FM Miguel Angel Moratinos, who is on a visit to Damascus, has hailed what he described as a "very positive" Syrian attitude to a two-month-old truce in Lebanon which Spanish troops are helping police. "They will cooperate in all fields in order to make the situation in Lebanon a real success," he added, after talks with both President Bashar Assad and his counterpart Walid Muallem.
In other Lebanon / Syria / Hezbollah / UNIFIL news, the Italian navy handed over to German command the UN naval force tasked with intercepting arms shipments bound for Hezbollah along the Lebanese coast, in accordance with the arms embargo established by Security Council Resolution 1701. Germany has agreed to send up to 2,400 military personnel to Lebanon.
Despite the presence of UNIFIL on both land and sea, violence continues in Lebanon. Earlier today, two RPGs hit a building near the UN headquarters in Beirut, slightly wounding four people. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the pre-dawn attack. Earlier this month, two bombs were thrown at two police stations causing minor damage but no injuries. Several days earlier, a clash between police and rioters left two boys dead.
I'm beginning to think that there is no non-military solution to this problem. I give up on the idea that common sense will apply! Who will disagree?
