Italian police said on Monday they had smashed an Algerian fundamentalist Islamist cell that gave logistical support to suspected terrorists in Algeria. A police spokesman said two arrests were made in Milan and one in Switzerland as part of a joint operation with Swiss police.
A statement said the cell "financed and gave logistical support to Islamic terrorism responsible for massacres in Algeria." More arrests were being made, it added. Italian police spokesman Lt. Col. Domenico Grimaldi told a news conference that the group was part of a wider network operating across much of Europe, and was connected to al-Qaeda.
In July, Italian police arrested four men believed to have links to an Algerian group named the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). In September, the GSPC is reported to have pledged allegiance to Osama Bin Laden.
