Tawfeeq Al Mansour, the Bahraini Ambassador to the UN, says his country is gearing up to play a vital role at the UN this year. "We have a very busy time ahead of us and this is a very important time for the kingdom, especially as it presides over the General Assembly," Al Mansour said yesterday. Last week, Bahraini lawyer, arbitrator and diplomat Shaikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa took over the presidency of the General Assembly and will hold the post for a year.
One of the most important roles for Shaikha Haya will be helping to choose a Secretary-General for the UN as Kofi Annan's term comes to an end this year. The General Assembly and the Security Council will have this responsibility placed on their shoulders, as the race for nominations continues between global players. Al Mansour said Bahrain would also be busy discussing ways to implement the global terrorism strategy.
On Friday at 17:15, FM Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa will set out Bahrain's stance and the role it plays in global issues and its impact on local, regional and international affairs in a speech to the General Assembly. Al Mansour said that while in New York, Shaikh Khalid will represent all Arab countries at the Ministerial Meeting at the Security Council. The meeting was called to press for progress in the Middle East peace process.
