King Abdullah has declared that al-Qaeda has been defeated in Saudi Arabia, which has been fighting a violent campaign against them since May 2003. Analysts apparently agree, saying tough Saudi security policies backed by Western intelligence agencies have rendered the group impotent.
"I can assure you that your country is well and the evil-doers are, thank God, defeated," the king said. "We say that they are finished now. As we have said before, we would drive them back whether it takes 20 years or more, but, God willing, they already have been."
Just last February the group tried to attack the country's biggest oil plant. A martyr video was released soon thereafter that Vital Perspective obtained through sources in the region. Since then, Saudi Arabia has began the process of constructing a security fence along its 560 mile desert border with Iraq in an effort to keep al-Qaeda terrorists from passing into the kingdom. We're personally highly skeptical of King Abdullah's declaration, so we'll keep an eye out for activity in the kingdom that can be attributed to al-Qaeda.
