The Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center has a new report covering the second half of April in the Israeli - Palestinian conflict. Suicide bombings, failed attempts, rocket attacks, stabbings, shootings and the Israeli response to these acts are all laid out. Plus, a special update on al-Qaeda and terror activitiy in Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. As always, plenty of statistical data is available as well.
Of particular interest to us was the terrorist attack that was stopped at the Karni crossing juxtaposed with the characterization of Karni in diplomatic circles. On April 26, Israeli security forces stopped a vehicle trying to make its wasy into Israel via the Karni crossing that was loaded with explosives. There was then a controlled detonation of explosives in a vehicle to relieve the threat (see the report for a photo of the controlled detonation).
What world leaders will read, however, is what James Wolfensohn wrote in his final report as Special Envoy for Gaza Disengagement. "The prolonged and repetitive closure of Karni, attributed to IDF warnings of security threats, has been extremely damaging. Since the beginning of the year, Karni has been closed on 50% of the days it was scheduled to operate... Closure at Karni has been devastating for the agricultural sector in Gaza." Nowhere in the Wolfensohn report does he mention that Karni has in fact been a frequent target for terrorists to enter Israel. Instaed, only the unfortunate economic impact upon Palestinians as a result of that terror activity is focused upon.
