Just one day after being part of a major announcement of his country's nuclear program, former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani flew to Damascus to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad. According to a Syrian presidential statement, Assad and Rafsanjani discussed bilateral cooperation, economic relations, Iraq and the Palestinian territories. They also discussed the international conference to be held in Tehran to support Palestinian people's rights.
Rafsanjani is reportedly on a Middle Eastern tour that will also include Kuwait. While we're not surprised over yet another meeting between allies Iran and Syria, the Kuwait meeting gives us pause. In late February, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became the first Iranian president to visit Kuwait since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Last month, we first noted this concern, both in the context of Iran's nuclear program and their involvement in Iraq. It's important to keep an eye on these developments, and we'll report back once we hear who Rafsanjani met with, and what was discussed.
