On Wednesday, an Islamic Jihad rocketmaker, Khaled Dahdouh, died in a car explosion in Gaza. The Israeli military said it was not involved and the Palestinian Interior Ministry said no missile parts were found in the incinerated car.
The AP sees Palestinians gathering "around the burning car of top commander of the Islamic Jihad's military wing in the Gaza Strip." But what do we see? We see a burning car in the foreground, but the power of the picture is behind the flames.
Two dozen all male passersby calmly stand behind the wreckage, some more or less interested - no emotion beyond curiosity, some so nonchalant they are not even facing the burning car. The attitude of these men is similar to the rubbernecking on America's highways. This picture reveals that the Palestinian "refugees" own nice gray suits and beige sedans, hardly the image associated with the term refugee.
What's missing in this picture is any semblances of a government that responds to incidents occurring within territory under its care. Where are the police, the rescue workers and the firefighters? Where is the Palestinian 'Authority'?
