Iran recently transferred $1.8 million to Islamic Jihad in the West Bank, encouraging them to carry out attacks in Israel ahead of its March 28 election, Israel's Minister of Defense Shaul Mofaz said in an interview. He says the money came from Iran, through Syria, and then into the West Bank.
"We know that Iran transferred in the last month $1.8 million to the Islamic Jihad organization in order to carry out terrorist attacks against Israel," Mofaz said.
There are also indications that Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Muslim Brotherhood are consolidating. "Hezbollah (funded by Iran and supported by Syria) is also involved in some of the terror operations here and sends messages, as well as money, which arrives from Iran to the Islamic Jihad, and to Hamas, from other sources. The bottom line is that there is a consolidation of the axis of evil in two senses: One is terrorism, and the second is the Iranian nuclear project," he added.
Traditionally, Israel has been confronted with a wave of terrorism just prior to its elections, which are schedule to take place in less then one week. Yesterday, police stopped Palestinian terrorists affiliated with Islamic Jihad from their operation after a high-speed chase on a highway. Some 4,500 police have been deployed in Jerusalem, and the chief of police says that he has taken into account "that terrorist elements are trying to sabotage the democratic process both ahead of the elections and on polling day itself."
