On Tuesday the Security Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, which operates in the southern region, echoing a resolution adopted 16 months ago. Arms are still flowing to militias in Lebanon from Syria, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said last October.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke with Lebanon's prime minister on Tuesday to discuss disarming Hezbollah, which receives support from Syria and Iran for terrorist operations against Israel. The U.S. has long classified Shiite Muslim Hezbollah as a terrorist group and Syria is a fixture on its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
