"Iran... hopes that the powerful presence of Hamas at the (political) scene brings about great achievements for the Palestinian nation," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said on Thursday. During a visit to Damascus this month, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad pledged support for militant Palestinian factions at a meeting with leaders from Islamic Jihad and Hamas. Ahmadinejad has said Israel should be "wiped off the map". Hamas also backs Iran's nuclear weapons program.
