The New Yorker recently sat down with Shalom Harari, a former Israeli Military Intelligence officer, to discuss the election of Hamas. Harari predicted such an outcome years ago, and sees further political domination by Islamists growing throughout the Middle East. Specifically, he points to Jordan and Egypt.
Harari agrees with our assessment that the reverberations will extend throughout the region. "As we speak there are growing fears not only in Israel but in Jordan, Egypt, and even Syria. The Hamas victory is a Middle East earthquake. Its shock waves will be felt in every town between Casablanca and Baghdad."
