Su-Shi Watch: your tax dollars at work

The US has provided Egypt with $1.3 billion a year in military aid since 1979, and an average of $815 million a year in economic assistance. All told, Egypt has received over $50 billion in US largesse since 1975. So far the return on this investment has been lousy. Here are two examples:

Hostile anti American propaganda is being broadcast across the Arab world by Nilesat, a satellite provider answerable to the Egyptian government. Nilesat airs the channel called Al-Zawraa, an Iraqi station that features non-stop scenes of US troops being picked off by snipers, blown up by roadside bombs and targeted by missiles. Bottom line: An arm of the anti-American Iraqi insurgency transmitting from the capital of one of America's strongest Arab allies. "The failure of US officials to get the Egyptians to pull the plug on Al-Zawraa underlines the complicated nature of the US-Egyptian relationship and the limits of American influence in the new regional equation. It is also another example of the emerging Cold War between Iran and Sunni Arab powers in the region," writes Lawrence Pintak.

Now look at the report from MEMRI: On the cover of its January 6, 2007 issue, the "mainstream" Egyptian weekly Roz Al-Yousef featured a manipulated photo of Saddam Hussein's execution, in which Saddam's head was replaced with that of U.S. President George W. Bush. The photo was titled "Bush's Execution." Inside the issue was an article of the same title, by Shafiq Ahmad 'Ali, accompanied by the photo and calling on the Americans to execute their president for the murder of Iraqi civilians and "as a true measure of justice, revenge and democracy."

The Egyptian government controlled media has been one of the most poisonous in the Middle East. It does little to promote democracy and economic reforms and it regularly infects Egypt's hearts and minds with antisemitic and anti-American propaganda. The least we can expect from Egypt is to stop using its "free media" weapon against us. President Bush: please hold the next check.

The coming Sunni-Shi'ite nuclear arms race

Gal Luft portrays an unsettling scenario of the face of things to come:

"As tension between Sunnis and Shi'ites mounts from Iraq to Lebanon another front is opening in the deepening strife between the two parts of the Muslim world: The race to acquire nuclear capabilities. Iran's uranium enrichment program en route to a Shi'ite bomb has already whetted the appetite of its Sunni neighbors to follow suit. The December meeting of the of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is a new milestone on the road to a Sunni Arab nuclear capability. In the meeting, GCC leaders decided on a joint program in the field of nuclear technology for "peaceful purposes". "Possessing nuclear technology […] has economic and scientific significance," the spokesman for the Council of Ministers explained. Two weeks later another Gulf country, Yemen, announced its aspirations to acquire nuclear technology. On the African side of the Middle East, Egypt and Algeria, two Sunni nations blessed with energy resources, have also declared their intension to pursue nuclear power. Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak drew roaring applause when he announced in a November speech before a combined session of the People's Assembly and Shura Council that Egypt was not "in need of anyone's authorization to develop peaceful nuclear energy".

"What is at stake today is not just a nuclear Iran but a full blown nuclearization of the world's most dangerous region. With this in mind the U.S.' and Europe's strategy should go beyond just preventing Iran from acquiring nukes. As this battle may already be lost, the focus now should be on the next wave of nuclear hopefuls. This will require the development of a fresh set of carrots and sticks as well as a candid dialogue which includes not only Sunni Arabs who desire nukes but also Russia, China and Pakistan, the countries most likely to provide them with the technology they need to meet their ambitions.

As the world transitioned from the Cold War to the war on radical Islam former CIA director James Woolsey said: "We have slain a large dragon. But we live now in a jungle filled with a bewildering variety of poisonous snakes." If subsequent to a failure to prevent a Shi'ite bomb comes another failure to prevent a Sunni bomb this unsavory jungle will be populated in no time with some of the worst of dragons."

Jihadis don't like blue eyed girls

Courtesy of MEMRI, a translation of Taliban Mullah Dadallah visiting an Al-Qaeda Base in Afghanistan, chanting along with his fellow terrorists:

Oh Muslim, arise, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

Oh Muslim, arise, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

We will return to Kabul – neither Bush nor Powell – oh heresy, don't even try,
there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

Oh heresy, don't even try, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

Regards to the Taliban, oh blessings of the All-Merciful, the Sunna after the
Koran, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

The Sunna after the Koran, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

Regards to the Taliban, oh blessings of the All-Merciful, the Sunna after the
Koran, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

The Sunna after the Koran, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

You are sufficient, oh bin Laden, don't sign a truce, you are sufficient, oh
Bin Laden, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

You are sufficient, oh bin Laden, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

The rule of jihad today does not require much thought, oh Muslim, arise, there
is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

Oh Muslim, arise, there is a black-eyed virgin in Paradise.

[etc. etc.]

The black-eyed virgin obsession is starting to make us suspect that sexual frustration is indeed one of those mysterious "root causes" of radical Islam. Dr. Tawfik Hamid, former member of the Egyptian terrorist group Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya:

"The first thing you have to understand is that [terrorism] has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with poverty or lack of education," he says. "I was from a middle-class family and my parents were not religious. Hardly anyone in the movement at university came from a background that was different from mine.

"I've heard this poverty nonsense time and time again from Western apologists for Islam, most of them not Muslim by the way. There are millions of passive supporters of terror who may be poor and needy but most of those who do the killing are wealthy, privileged, educated and free. If it were about poverty, ask yourself why it is middle-class Muslims -- and never poor Christians -- who become suicide bombers in Palestine."

His analysis is fascinating. Muslim fundamentalists believe, he insists, that Saudi Arabia's petroleum-based wealth is a divine gift, and that Saudi influence is sanctioned by Allah. Thus the extreme brand of Sunni Islam that spread from the Kingdom to the rest of the Islamic world is regarded not merely as one interpretation of the religion but the only genuine interpretation. The expansion of violent and regressive Islam, he continues, began in the late 1970s, and can be traced precisely to the growing financial clout of Saudi Arabia.

"We're not talking about a fringe cult here," he tells me. "Salafist [fundamentalist] Islam is the dominant version of the religion and is taught in almost every Islamic university in the world. It is puritanical, extreme and does, yes, mean that women can be beaten, apostates killed and Jews called pigs and monkeys."

[...] "North Americans are too squeamish about discussing the obvious sexual dynamic behind suicide bombings. If they understood contemporary Islamic society, they would understand the sheer sexual tension of Sunni Muslim men. Look at the figures for suicide bombings and see how few are from the Shiite world. Terrorism and violence yes, but not suicide. The overwhelming majority are from Sunnis. Now within the Shiite world there are what is known as temporary marriages, lasting anywhere from an hour to 95 years. It enables men to release their sexual frustrations.

"Islam condemns extra-marital sex as well as masturbation, which is also taught in the Christian tradition. But Islam also tells of unlimited sexual ecstasy in paradise with beautiful virgins for the martyr who gives his life for the faith. Don't for a moment underestimate this blinding passion or its influence on those who accept fundamentalism."

That "bin Laden you are sufficient" phrase also raises some interesting questions, which we will leave to the reader's analysis. We will just note that for bin Laden, insufficiency seems to be of greater likelihood.

Announcing Su-Shi Watch

It's becoming obvious that the millenia long strife between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims is well on its way to a full on conflagaration.  From Baghdad to Beirut, from Riyadh to Cairo the battle for hegemony over the Muslim world is unfolding in extreme ferocity. Yet given radical Islam's war against the West, the war between the two branches of Islam often falls under the radar. We'll be tagging posts that highlight this conflict as Su-Shi Watch from now on, and urge you to do so as well so that we can all get a clearer picture of the shifting balance of power in the Muslim world and how perhaps it can eventually be used to the advantage of the Free World.

Here's a start:

Egyptian columnist: "We must be more wary of the Shi'ites than of the Jews because the matter of the Jews is well known, and their deceitful deeds are known from the Koran and the Sunna, as well as from modern history... But as for the Shi'a, it may influence people through lies and deceit, under the pretense of protecting Ahl Al-Bayt - because most Egyptians have a particular affection for Ahl Al-Bayt, and this makes it easy to influence them and thus introduce Shi'ism into Egyptian homes."

And in the same MEMRI article: Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi one of the most influencial Sunni clerics: "Shi'ite infiltration of Egypt will ignite a blaze that will destroy everything in its path."

Egyptians Stop Palestinian PM at Rafah Border, Confiscates Millions in Cash

Israel agreed Thursday evening to allow Palestinian PM Ismail Haniyeh to cross from Egypt into Gaza, but without the $35 million in cash he had brought from a tour of Muslim states. Defense Minister Amir Peretz had earlier instructed the IDF to stop Palestinians entering Gaza via the Rafah border crossing, in order to prevent Haniyeh from crossing with the money.

Israel Radio reported that the money would be left in Egypt, and on Friday transferred to the bank account of the Arab League. Israeli security sources said that the decision to close the border was made to stop the cash transfer, not to prevent Haniyeh's return.

The head of Egypt's intelligence service, Omar Suleiman, had contacted Israeli officials in order to find a solution that would allow Haniyeh to return to Gaza. Hamas members, angered by the ban on Haniyeh's money, burst into the Rafah border terminal, sparking a gunbattle with guards before taking control of the crossing. Travelers at the terminal dove for cover and a top Hamas official furiously tried to persuade the gunmen to disperse. Following the gunbattle, European monitors said the border would not be reopened Thursday, though Haniyeh might still be able to cross from Egypt.

In the chaos of the attack, two loud explosions rocked the area, and security officials said Hamas had blown a hole in the border fence about one kilometer from the terminal.

One American Among Group Arrested in Egypt for Plotting Terrorist Attacks

Egyptian police have arrested an American, 11 Europeans, and several others from Arab countries for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks in Middle Eastern countries including Iraq. According to the Interior Ministry, the group was part of an Islamic terrorist cell that had adopted extremist ideas and was living in Egypt under the guise of pursuing Arabic and Islamic studies.

"Investigations have confirmed that those elements are related to some terrorist organizations abroad," the ministry said. "They were seeking to recruit others, teach them destructive beliefs, urging them for jihad, traveling to Iraq to carry out operations via other countries in the region."

In Washington, the State Department confirmed that an American had been arrested in Egypt about a week ago but could not provide any details. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said U.S. officials were "seeking consular access to this individual" but declined to give more information, citing U.S. privacy laws.

Egyptian Intel Chief in Israel for Prisoner Release Talks Ahead of Rice Meetings

Omar Suleiman, the head of Egyptian intelligence, is visiting Israel for talks on a possible prisoner exchange between Israel and the Palestinians. Suleiman held talks with senior Israeli officials Wednesday and met with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal. Hamas is demanding that Israel free 1400 Palestinian prisoners, including 400 women and minors in exchange for kidnapped IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit.

Earlier this week Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said he would hold direct talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, but only after Shalit was freed. Secretary Rice plans to meet Abbas in Jericho on Thursday where talks are expected to focus on how to extend a ceasefire agreed to by Israel and the Palestinians on Sunday - and revive the internationally-backed "road-map" peace plan which calls for an eventual Palestinian state next to Israel. Israel Radio is reporting that Secretary Rice will also meet Olmert on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia Beheads Egyptian Man Convicted in Stabbing Death in Public

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday beheaded an Egyptian who killed a Saudi man after an argument, the Interior Ministry said. Rajih bin Ahmed bin Mustafa Waziri was convicted of stabbing to death Majid bin Abdel-Karim bin Abdullah following a dispute. He was executed in the southern town of Jizan.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed. Tuesday's execution brought to 25 the number of people beheaded in the kingdom this year. Saudi executions are performed with a sword and in public as a deterrent.

Haniyeh to Visit Egypt for Talks on Palestinian Unity Government, Gilad Shalit

According to Egypt's official news agency MENA, Palestinian PM Ismail Haniyeh will visit Egypt tomorrow for talks on the Palestinian national unity government and a prisoners' swap with Israel. Earlier on Sunday night, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal wrapped up a three-day visit to Egypt, during which he held talks with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Omar Soliman and Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.

Several Hamas leaders have paid intensive visits to Egypt recently for talks with Egyptian officials in an attempt to reach a solution to the issue of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been held hostage by Palestinian terrorists since he June 25.

Egyptians have been playing a mediating role between Hamas and Fatah as the two factions have been bickering for months over the formation of a unity government in place of the Hamas-led one to end the current economic and political crises in the Palestinian territories.
