Iran Parliament Passes Law Requiring Nazi Style Badges for Jews, Christians

First came Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's call to "wipe Israel off the map," then came the government conference to re-examine the history of the Final Solution, and now we have the Iranian parliament passing a law frighteningly reminiscent of Nazi treatment of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and others. The law passed requires Jews and Christians to wear colored badges to identify them and other religious minorities as non-Muslims.

Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.

The new law was drafted two years ago, but was stuck in the Iranian parliament until recently when it was revived at the behest of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It must be approved by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei before it is put into effect.

The Iranian position on Jews and Israel is well established, but this should send new shockwaves through the international community. As it is discussed, we cannot forget Iran's nuclear ambitions. As the esteemed Charles Krauthammer wrote earlier this month:

As it races to acquire nuclear weapons, Iran makes clear that if there is any trouble, the Jews will be the first to suffer. "We have announced that wherever [in Iran] America does make any mischief, the first place we target will be Israel," said Gen. Mohammad Ebrahim Dehghani, a top Revolutionary Guards commander. Hitler was only slightly more direct when he announced seven months before invading Poland that, if there was another war, "the result will be . . . the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe."

Last week Bernard Lewis, America's dean of Islamic studies, who just turned 90 and remembers the 20th century well, confessed that for the first time he feels it is 1938 again. He did not need to add that in 1938, in the face of the gathering storm -- a fanatical, aggressive, openly declared enemy of the West, and most determinedly of the Jews -- the world did nothing.

When Iran's mullahs acquire their coveted nukes in the next few years, the number of Jews in Israel will just be reaching 6 million. Never again?

Accoding to the French newspaper Le Monde, a Jewish Member of the Iranian Parliament denies the above news. Yet, I can hardly imagine him being anything else than a fierce anti-Sionist since as an Iranian MP you can probably not really show unlimited sympathy for the Jewish state. However, the denial is there.

Yep. Fortunately, it is a hoax. There is a new law in the pipeline that will deal with the Muslim dress code, esp. with the female half.

The color badges are a detail added by some Iranian expats in Canada.
