Thousands Rally on Mall to Bring Attention to First Genocide of 21st Century

Vital Perspective was on hand on the Mall today for the Save Darfur Now "Rally Against Genocide" -- below are a sampling of pictures and a short video (no audio - Quicktime).

The crowd was very energetic and for the most part in our assessment, were affiliated with religous organizations. Speakers included Elie Wiesel, George Clooney, Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R-MD), Rev. Al Sharpton (entertaining as always), and many others.

Bahrain Expresses Fear Over Iranian Nuclear Program, Hamas Government

Newsletter_belooshiThe government of Bahrain fears Iran's nuclear ambitions and Hamas' control of the Palestinian government, Ambassador Naser M. Y. Al Belooshi said Wednesday at a private reception.

"We feel very unsafe. We are not sure that something like Chernobyl will not happen again," Al Belooshi said. "We would like to see a more united front against Iran. The United States is leading the charge, and other countries should follow."

Al Belooshi also said Bahrain would not finance the Palestinian Authority under Hamas' leadership. "We are concerned about cutting aid to the Palestinians, but we do not want terrorism to prosper. We would like Hamas to sit with Israeli officials and negotiate peace," he said.

Responding to Terrorism Report, Hezbollah Says Bush Should Top List

Hezbollah said President Bush should be named the world's top terrorist, responding to a U.S. official report that did not remove the group from a list of terrorist organisations.

The State Department's 2005 Country Reports on Terrorism also kept Syria and Iran, Hezbollah's main backers, on its list of state sponsors of terrorism. The report said Iran provided Hezbollah with extensive funding and weapons.

"The person who deserves to be on top of the terrorists' list is the U.S. President George W. Bush and his aides who filled the world with prisons," Hezbollah said in a statement. "Hezbollah considers being on the U.S. terrorism list as a medal for its fighters and a confirmation that its stance and policies against the Zionist aggression and American hegemony are correct," said the statement, received late on Saturday.

Jazeeragate: Conservative Group Protests Planned English Language Network

AljazeeralogoOn Sunday, five people (at its peak) from the United American Committee, a conservative group formed to "promote awareness of threats which face America from within our very own borders, primarily focusing on Islamic extremism in America," protested against the planned launch of al-Jazeera's planned English language U.S. station at their Washington headquarters. UAC Founder & Chair Jesse Petrilla explains in an interview some of the rationale behind the protest in this radio interview.

The UAC said they weren't protesting their right to broadcast, but rather "to let the network know that they are not welcome in the U.S., and to send a message to any cable providers not to carry al-Jazeera's planned American station which the UAC feels broadcasts propaganda sympathetic to the enemies of the U.S." A sample letter which people are urged to send to their cable companies and satellite providers, listing the problems with al-Jazeera, is offered to people via the UAC site here (MS Word).

Olmert Says Ahmadinejad "Speaks Like Hitler"; PFLP Pledges to Be Iran's Ally

In an interview with the German newspaper Bild, Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "is a psychopath of the worst kind. He speaks like Hitler did of the extermination of the entire Jewish nation." Soon afterwards, PFLP leader Ahmed Jibril warned the U.S. and Israel that if they attacked Syria or Iran, the PFLP would fight them.

"We will not allow any aggression against Syria or the Islamic Republic of Iran," Jibril told a rally of about 1,000 supporters in a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus. "I say it frankly, we will not only be on their side, we will be in the forefront," said Jibril.

In the 1960s through 1980s, his PFLP-GC hijacked an Israeli airliner, machine-gunned another at Zurich's airport, and blew up a Tel Aviv-bound Swissair plane, killing all 47 aboard. In 1987, a PFLP-GC guerrilla flew from Lebanon into Israel on a hang-glider and killed six soldiers before being shot dead.

Alleged Drivers of Sinai Bombers Arrested by Egyptian Police

Egyptian police have detained two men they said drove people suspected of involvement in bomb attacks in the resort of Dahab and north Sinai earlier this week, the state MENA news agency reported.

Security forces said one of the detained drivers had picked up three Bedouin from central Sinai on the eve of the Dahab attacks and had driven them to the resort.

Police said the other driver, a Palestinian living in north Sinai, had driven a bomb suspect close to an airport used by the Multinational Force and Observers, which monitors the border with Israel. Police said the driver's car had since vanished.

Vital Perspective Exclusive: IAEA Report Shows Iranian Defiance Continues

The IAEA report on the Iranian nuclear program is quite damning and points out the 20 years of Iran's deception and its total unwillingness to answer for conduct. It discloses that Iran has been working on advanced P-2 centrifuges – as Ahmadinejad bragged about last week – revealing a previously unknown secret track toward nuclear bomb fuel, outside of that which the IAEA had been following previously. P-2 centrifuges are more sophisticated and reliable, making it easier for Iran to ramp up the production of enriched uranium.

Their other work – on plutonium, recent successful work on the 164-centrifuge cascade and announcement last week of the production of enriched uranium – and their stated ambition to install 3,000 centrifuges over the next several months is extremely worrisome. You read it here first.

With just 1,500 centrifuges running in concert, Iran could produce enough fuel for a nuclear bomb in less than a year. Iranian officials have stated they will build a full-scale 3,000-centrifuge operation later this year, with the ultimate objective of deploying 54,000 centrifuges by the end of 2007.

According to the report, "gaps remain in the Agency's [IAEA] knowledge with respect to the scope and content of Iran's centrifuge programme. Because of this, and other gaps in the Agency's knowledge, including the role of the military in Iran's nuclear programme, the Agency is unable to make progress in its efforts to provide assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran."

With Tehran continuing to defy the international community, the Security Council is expected to consider the use of strong economic and political sanctions as tools to dissuade Iran from developing nuclear weapons under Chapter VII. Thankfully, most analysts expect a Chapter VII, (i.e., legally binding resolution) to be passed in the coming weeks with or without Russian support. However, our concern remains that valuable time continues to be lost as Iran's scientists race towards technological self-sufficiency, while the international community continues to debate its reaction. The Chapter VII resolution will only provide the legal context for future sanctions, which are not expected until later this year.

For the record, the long list of nuclear activities Iran kept hidden from the IAEA includes:

  1. Clandestine construction of a pilot uranium enrichment facility;
  2. Construction of a large-scale enrichment facility;
  3. Construction of a facility to convert uranium yellowcake into uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6) - which then can be enriched to create nuclear bombs;
  4. Construction of a heavy-water reactor that can be used to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons without having to master the uranium enrichment process;
  5. Importation of the design and components for centrifuges used to enrich uranium;
  6. Importation of 1.8 tons of uranium yellowcake;
  7. Experimentation with the separation of plutonium;
  8. Experimentation with polonium (a radioactive isotope used to trigger and boost nuclear explosions);
  9. Importation of instructions on how to weaponize highly enriched uranium.

Iran's cooperation is an oxymoron, as the IAEA attests in the latest report: "After more than three years of Agency efforts to seek clarity about all aspects of Iran's nuclear programme, the existing gaps in knowledge continue to be a matter of concern... The Agency cannot make a judgment about, or reach a conclusion on, future compliance or intentions."

Ahmadinejad's continued threats against the West, U.S., and Israel, denial of the Holocaust, and open defiance of the Security Council, leave no doubt this is a dictator with a deadly agenda. His messianic vision of extremist Shiite armageddon should not be taken lightly.

Our sources tell us that European leaders are expressing growing alarm in private conversations about the implications of a genocidal dictator armed with nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them. Vital Perspective remains committed to providing the latest facts and insight on what we believe is the gravest threat of our time.

Lebanese Leaders Not Expected to Oust Pro-Syrian President from Power

Emilelahoud_webLebanese leaders resumed talks on Friday over the fate of pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud, with the international community ratcheting up the pressure on Damascus. Lebanese politicians, however, who have been deeply divided since the end of Syria's 29-year military presence and domination of its smaller neighbor last year, are widely expected to maintain Lahoud in power, despite calls for his resignation.

"The departure of President Lahoud will require a miracle," admitted leading anti-Syrian Christian leader Samir Geagea. MP Mohammed Kabbani, another member of the anti-Syrian bloc, has also acknowledged that "cohabitation will be forced on us at the end of the talks on Friday". His term expires in September 2007.

U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey Feltman called has for Lahoud to quit, expressing his hope that "lingering Syrian interference in Lebanon - both direct and through its proxies - will end". Lahoud, who has been boycotted by Washington and Paris, has made support for Hezbollah - which is allied with Syria and Iran - a priority of his political agenda. He has rejected UN calls for integrating Hezbollah's into the regular Lebanese army.

Ahmadinejad: Iran Doesn't Give a Damn About IAEA Report, UN Action

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Friday that Iran would pay no attention to international calls to halt its nuclear work, hours before the IAEA reports on Tehran insubordination to Security Council demands.

"Those who want to prevent Iranians from obtaining their right, should know that we do not give a damn to such resolutions," Ahmadinejad told a rally in northwest Iran. "Enemies think that by ... threatening us, launching psychological warfare or ... imposing embargos can dissuade our nation to obtain nuclear technology."

Despite the "we do't give a damn" attitude, Iran unsuccessfully tried to lobby the IAEA in the 11th hour this week. We expect to obtain the report from sources by midday today. Continue to check back with us for key documents and analysis.
